History of the Organization
Southern
New Mexico Pride has existed in various forms, under various names, for
several years. The first recorded picnic was sponsored by a group of
lesbians looking for a social activity in 1990. Originally, Las Cruces
Pride (as it was then known) consisted of a small group of community
members held a picnic in a local park. In the late 1990s, a walking
parade was added. It has since grown into a part-year, volunteer-run
organization, working in conjunction with local community groups and
vendors, to provide a walking parade followed by a picnic, artisans,
vendors, and activities in a local park. In 2006, Las Cruces Pride
changed its name to Southern NM Pride to represent more communities. In
2008, Southern NM Pride was honored by Albuquerque Pride with its
Honored Dignitary-Emerging Leader award.
